Our Pranakriya Director Spotlight for October is on Devadas Gregg Day

DIRECTOR OF WHICH MODULES: Asanas as Spiritual Doorways

FAVORITE HOBBIES/PAST-TIMES: Hiking, biking, snowshoeing, skiing … pretty much anything that takes me into the woods.

FAVORITE FOOD: Anything anybody else prepares for me when I visit.

FAVORITE PERSON(S): My three kids and their kids come right to the top. A good friend who has been a sohbet partner over the years (a Sufi practice of dialog where each response carries the conversation further along a spiritual dimension), who now finds his sadhana at its most fulfilling as he continues under a terminal diagnosis of heart disease.

FAVORITE QUOTE: Been working with this one for some years – kind of like yamas and niyamas:

This is what we shall do:

Love the earth and sun and the animals,

Despise riches, give alms to everyone that asks,

Stand up for the stupid and crazy,

Devote your income and labor to others,

Hate tyrants,

Argue not concerning God,

Have patience and indulgence toward all people…

Re-examine all you have been told at school or church or in any book,

Dismiss what insults your very soul,

And your very flesh shall become a great poem.

— Walt Whitman, Specimen Days & Collect

FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION: I have been enjoying some travel in retirement now. I make lists of interesting places to go, but India keeps rising to the top of the list … so I’m planning another return this winter.

WHAT ARE YOU READING RIGHT NOW? You caught me at a busy reading time – got two things going. One is a research project on subtle anatomy in tantric yoga – so, I am buried in a number of tantric texts, both Hindu and Buddhist. I am also preparing for fall term to continue auditing philosophy courses at Williams College, so reading Immanuel Kant and Ludwig Wittgenstein.

WHAT MUSIC DO YOU LIKE TO PRACTICE TO IF ANY? I use to work with chanting, but now more about silence.

UPCOMING GOALS/PLANS THAT YOU ARE EXCITED ABOUT: I try to keep all this to a minimum and let the excitement be about what I am doing now…, but I do have an extended visit with grandkids coming up and, hey, that’s pretty exciting to me!

ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR PRANAKRIYA PEEPS? Continue both in your sadhana and living to good purpose, letting both support each other.
