Do you have to do yoga in a bikini (or just board shorts for the guys) on a beach to get any type of social media following?
It’s true. There are some people out there who have grown to be online yoga superstars because of sharing advanced yoga poses in a bikini on a beach instagram pics.
But you don’t have to*. There are other (and maybe better) ways to connect with your students and online followers. We can even reflect on the yama, Satya, to consider what it means to show up honestly when marketing ourselves in the online world.
Considering Satya in marketing your yoga business
- Is what I’m sharing online truthful?
- Is it “me”? Does it represent who I really am, in my day to day life?
- Or it some image that I think people will like, or go “viral” and therefore I’m sharing it but it’s really not who I am?
Remember too, it’s not about the quantity of your online followers but the quality. I’ve worked with clients with 1000’s of followers who received little to no engagement on their online channels and clients with just a few hundred followers – with lots of engagement.
Are you gaining followers because you’re showing up in an authentic, mindful way that is true to yourself and your teaching? Or are you gaining followers because you’re sharing content that isn’t completely authentic but that you think people will like?
Before you share something online, ask yourself – does this really represent my authentic self? My teaching? What I believe yoga is?
*One last note – if sharing pics online of you doing yoga in a bikini on a beach is how you want to show up in your yoga teaching business, then that’s okay too. YOU get to decide what your personal brand of yoga teaching is and how you want to share your yoga teaching and yourself with your community of students and followers.
