Growing into Truth: 6-Week Spring Sadhana
Yama Niyama Virtual Book Club

with Pam Blum and Usha Lakshmi

Wednesdays, May 8 - June 12, 2024
7:00 - 8:30 pm Eastern

By firmly grasping the flower of a single virtue, a person can lift the entire garland of yama and niyama.
~ Swami Kripalu

Through reading, practice and self-observation, explore how the yamas and niyamas show up in your life today. Many of us have studied these foundational concepts during teacher training or considered them more casually, but have we looked at ourselves through their lens recently? As we progress in our daily personal practice, and for some, in leading yoga for others, taking a look at these guiding tenets of the yogic lifestyle can help us understand what comes up through the stirring of prana, and look at ourselves with curiosity and fresh eyes. The revisiting of the yamas and niyamas from time to time allows us to carve out time to engage in this important self-observation without judgment, in an effort to strengthen our own container and live in our own truth.

Objectives:

  • Re-visit and expand upon six of the fundamental underpinnings of yoga to continue building a meaningful and life changing path that is guided from within.

  • Provide a systematic way to uncover and chip away at obstacles or illusions so that our practice enables us to assume more responsibility for our lives

  • Explore growing into truth in community, this ongoing work reveals greater clarity and authenticity because it is focused on this version of YOU in this never ending ever changing journey of transformation, becoming and arriving.

Structure:

  • 6 weeks, 90 minute virtual sessions May 8 - June 12, 2024 from 7:00-8:30 pm Eastern.

  • Exploring Deborah Adele's book The Yamas and Niyamas, we'll collectively dive into 6 of the 10 foundational principles that lay the groundwork for continually enriching a hybrid yoga practitioner's journey

  • Beginning with self study (swadhaya) , and exploring the deeper inquiries of discipline (tapas), non-harming (ahimsa), respecting energy (brahmacharya), truthfulness (satya) and closing with acceptance (santosha), this journey provides a structure for continual personal evolution.

  • Each session begins with approx 30 minute discussion followed with 45 minute themed practice and closes with 15 minute integration and set up for the next week

  • Primary and secondary journal prompts will be offered each week to provide a basis for self inquiry and group discussion

  • Program 'buddy' encouraged for support, community building and accountability

“The highest form of spiritual practice is self-observation without judgment.” ~ Swami Kripalu
